Newborn Essentials

When I had my first born almost 10 years ago, I was 16 and absolutely clueless on what a newborn needed. Luckily, I had helpful family and friends who were there to fill me in on the needs and necessities. These days, we have the option to look to blogs and online personas for advice.
Throwback to a little over two years ago when I was pregnant with my second baby, and I was back at square one. It had been almost 7 years since I had a newborn and I was back to knowing absolutely nothing about what a newborn would need. Thankfully, there were more mummy bloggers/vloggers around and I made sure to watch and read absolutely everything there was to know about the newborn essentials.
I loved that they talked about the things you needed, and the things that companies want you to believe you need, but you really don't. I also loved that they expressed what worked for them and what didn't, because like anything in life, what works for one person, won't work for another. That goes the same for newborns. What may have worked for my baby, more often than not may not work for yours, so just be mindful of that.
Besides the obvious things like clothes, nappies, wipes and bottles, I've curated a list of newborn essentials that I think are vital in your first few years of parenthood.
In no particular order, here we go:
- BABY BAG
Now this is really important. For the first year or so of your bub's life, you're going to be carrying everything but the kitchen sink in this baby bag, so make sure you pick a great quality, sturdy, long-lasting and spacious baby bag to fill all of your baby (and mummy) necessities.
As a new mum, you'll find yourself over-packing a lot for "just in case" purposes, but that's more clever than one would like to admit because you wouldn't believe me if I told you how many times we actually used everything in the bag, at one point or another.
I did a lot of research to see what type of baby bag suited me and my needs. I opted for a discounted Mimco baby bag which was made out of mainly nylon, as I read they were easier to clean and maintain. Classically, mine was pink. And I absolutely loved it.
My recommendation: Mimco waver baby bag - couldn't find the exact one I had, but this is similar and just as cute {click here to shop}
- NAPPY CADDY
This is controversial in the sense that some people never think of it, and honestly, we never did either until we were in the baby store and saw it. For us, it came incredibly handy to have because we didn't have space for a nursery for bub, so we would change her on our bed and used the nappy caddy to lug around all of the diaper changing necessities we needed whenever we needed them. It's also useful to have once your baby becomes a little more active, because then you have every diaper change necessity in one place that can be transferred from room to room.
Just like it's name, it's a box that has compartments for wipes, nappies, changing mat and then a drawer for other bits and bobs. In the drawer, we kept the nappy rash cream, a thermometer and nappy bags. This is something I always recommend when new mums ask me what I think they need to have for bub.
My recommendation: b.box nappy caddy {click here to shop}
- DIAPER BIN
I never actually thought of this until my cousin told me how much of a lifesaver it was for her. She actually gifted me our own at my baby shower and nappy changing has been a breeze. Our room constantly smells divine rather than like a constant array of baby excrements. I guess some would argue that a diaper bin isn't a necessity because wrapping a dirty nappy in a nappy bag works just the same, and that's exactly what we did with our first born, but if you have the finances to get a diaper bin, I highly recommend it because it takes the struggle of constantly taking out the trash every other day. We only take out our trash once a week now because that's how handy the diaper bin has been. You really only need to clear it out once (or sometimes twice, if need be) a week.
Even though nappy bags work just as well, we did test it out and found that it would still stink up our room every so often, unlike the nappy bin, where the smell was always trapped right where it belonged until we had to take the trash out.
My recommendation: Tommee Tippee Sangenic TEC Nappy Disposal Bin Unit {click here to shop}
- BABY MONITOR/SOUND MACHINE
Before I had my baby, I didn't think I needed a baby monitor or sound machine at all. I watched all of these mummy bloggers rave about them, but immediately wrote them off as "not for me." I knew I'd be spending every waking moment with my baby, so it just wasn't a necessity (plus, they're super expensive). And for the first three weeks, it wasn't. Until my husband had to go back to work, that's when it really hit me that I couldn't possibly do this without a baby monitor of some sort. Luckily, we found a gift card that we hadn't used yet from my baby shower and it was enough to cover more than half of the cost of a good quality baby monitor. I finally got peace of mind when we had it all set up and working. The one we picked out had a built-in sound machine with 19 lullabies, nature sounds, womb sounds, white noise, a built-in night light and a touch screen monitor.
This was honestly perfect because when she would nap, I could go into the shower and still keep an eye on her. We also knew we wanted one with a sound machine for white noise in the background considering it's good for them to be resistant to noise during nap/sleep time.
My recommendation: Oricom Video Monitor - this is pretty much the exact same one as ours, but we had a purple one {click here to shop}
- BABY SWING/ROCKER
What an absolute treasure it's been, even though it was yet another item I didn't think I'd need until I had a newborn in my arms every hour of every day. In the early days of giving birth, it was so important for me to make sure I was taking care of myself too. Settling bub into a baby swing/rocker gave me that luxury. Making sure I was having hands-free moments without baby was vital in recovering, both physically and mentally. Though a newborn is light as a feather, it's also really important to make sure your baby doesn't get coddled by being held all the time, and trust me, they'll get their fair share of being held when family and friends visit you and take turns with your newborn like it's a game of pass-the-parcel. This is where a baby swing comes in handy. The one we got had great features such as 5 swing speeds, 8 melodies and 3 nature sounds, along with an easy to wash and easy to fold/store function, slip resistance fabric and a toy bar with two toys for bub to enjoy as her brain developed. This worked like a charm when I would need to put baby down so I could eat, use the bathroom or just have some moments free without bub.
My recommendation: Ingenuity Swing N Go Portable Swing - this is pretty much the exact same one we had except ours was pink, of course {click here to shop}
- BATH TUB/SEAT
So this is two parts: 1. a bath tub in itself, and 2. a bath seat/support - so important and so useful! I had both for both my kids when they were newborns and found them tremendously helpful. It gave me peace of mind while I would bathe them alone because I had all the bath support I needed to make it a safe and comfortable experience for both myself and bub.
Starting with the bath tub, it was easier to fill up a small, portable tub rather than a full size bath tub that usual homes come with. Your baby is tiny and chances are that they'll only spend less than 5 minutes a day in them, so you really don't need to be wasting so much water. The bath seat/support is great for newborns especially as it's comfortable for them to lay/sit up on while you bathe them, including if you're doing it alone. All you really have to do is lay them down on the bath support (or hold onto their bottom if you're afraid, which trust me, you will be until you get used to it) and you're good to go - no need to hold them the entire time and struggle pouring water over them whilst trying to be super super careful that baby slips out of your arms.
I'd suggest going with a bath support that's made of fabric as you're able to keep it warm for bub just by pouring water over it, unlike the plastic supports which will more likely than not keep cold and be a reason as to bub slipping off.

- PRAM/STROLLER
To make your trips and journeys that little bit simpler, a stroller will come in very useful. It's hard to find the right one that bub will like, but you'll never know until you try one at least, so try to do some research on what's the safest, most comfortable, best quality and affordable in your budget type of stroller. My husband and I went with one from a brand called Babybee Prams because we knew what we were naming our daughter at the time, and her initials spelled out "BEE" and while scrolling online one day, I came across Babybee and thought it was fate, like a corny old mama bear. Don't worry, I further investigated to make sure it was the right pram for us, and we both loved everything about its features. Best part? We were able to use AfterPay! But it's great because it's a 2-in1 bassinet and stroller set. So once bub grows out of the bassinet, you can easily interchange it into a sit up stroller, instead of going out and buying a whole new one. Till this day, we use it when we take our daughter out and it's still in amazing shape even almost two years later!
My recommendation: Babybee Comet Plus 2 in 1 Bassinet & Stroller Set - this is the updated version from the one we currently have, but ours has a vanilla/beige cover {click here to shop}
- BABY CAR SEAT
Before you even leave the hospital, this is one vital newborn essential that you MUST have. The hospital even checks to make sure you have one of these before letting you go home, so make sure this is your number one must-have on your baby shopping list, because it's the highest necessity, up there with your baby. You can choose to either have a capsule or a car seat - totally up to preference and budget.
We were lucky enough to be gifted our baby seat by my best friend and her fiance, so we didn't even have to go through the stress of researching and finding the right one for us. But we decided to go with a convertible car seat instead of a capsule since a capsule only lasts till their 6 months old and then you have to get a convertible, so it just made sense to go straight to the convertible, which you are able to use from birth until they are 4 years old (which you will then switch over to a booster, but more on that later.)
My recommendation: Safety 1st Summit AP Infinity Car Seat {click here to shop}
- BABY CARRIER/SLING
This may not be a necessity to most mums, but I found it really helpful to have because with my first-born I spent a lot of my time carrying him around since he didn't like his pram, so this time around, I wanted to be prepared for the sake of my arms. It was useful in the sense that I was able to be hands-free when necessary, but still close enough to baby for her to feel safe and nurtured. Your newborn spent 9 months in the womb, super close to you and these baby carriers/slings are the perfect invention to keep that closeness as they develop and grow. I've also heard of many positive things about baby slings if you're thinking of going in that direction. But if you're a mama who likes to get stuff done, these carriers are you. But please, relax for the first few months and spend quality close time with your baby. Time is constantly fleeting.
My recommendation: Ergobaby All Position Omni 360 Carrier {click here to shop}
- SWADDLES/WRAPS
Newborns spent nine months in a warm, cozy womb. Naturally, they're going to struggle with all the room they have in the outside real world. A swaddle is the perfect item to help them feel all snug, safe and warm. Newborns also have a spasm reflex that wakes them up during naptimes, which can make them feel really uneasy and scare them a bit. The swaddle helps tame that down and keep them calm and sleeping soundly.
Make sure to get different kinds of materials, especially for when the weather changes up. when my daughter was born in Winter, we had jersey/cotton fabric swaddles and also wool type ones. But in the Summer, we switched over to muslin wraps, and they're great and light too! Just have a little scour for the perfect ones for you and bub. They will have your newborn sleeping soundly for hours.
My recommendation: Living Textiles Swan Jersey Wraps {click here to shop} but honestly, we even loved the ones from Kmart if you're looking for a cheaper alternative
- PACIFIERS
Now this is a hit or miss product. For some babies, they're great; for others, not so much. Both of my babies were NOT a fan of pacifiers. In fact, they both hated them and you can quote me when I say I tried absolutely eeevvveeerryyyttthhiinngg out there. Every shape, size and brand, nothing seemed to work for my babies. I eventually gave up, but that doesn't mean you should! When bub's a newborn, be sure to introduce the pacifier early enough for them to get used to it, but not so early that it'll confuse them with the nipple (if breastfeeding.)
My recommendation: since none of them really worked for us, I'd recommend just buying a bunch of different brands and trying out different ones for your bub. Doing your research also helps!
- BASSINET/CRIB
Whether you're choosing to co-sleep or not, a bassinet/crib is a great item to have. We co-slept with both of our babies; the first time was because our room was so tiny, it couldn't fit a crib, but the second time around, we had a crib in there for her, but she was always so comfortable sleeping beside us, and honestly, so were we beside her. To this day, we have the convertible crib in our bedroom as she does tend to fall asleep there from time to time, which helps a lot as she's growing and we're definitely running out of space between the three of us.
Finding the right one is completely up to you. Doing a lot of research with quality, affordability and longevity is really important in this case. We chose a crib that fit my aesthetics, was super comfy but also could convert into a toddler bed as she grew older, and was within our price range. It's unfortunately no longer available on the IKEA website, but hopefully my recommendation is just as good as the one we've got!
My recommendation: IKEA SOLGUL Cot {click here to shop}
So those are the major things I think are essential for newborns. Here are a list of a few little bits and bobs which will make the transition a little easier...
- NAPPY RASH CREAM
When we were in the last few weeks of shopping for bub, this was another thing on top of my list as a necessity. I remember horrible nappy rashes with my first born and Sudocrem was an absolute lifesaver in terms of healing and relieving pain. I knew I had to include this in my Nappy Caddy necessities, as I believe it truly works wonders. At the same time, it's gentle on baby's skin! - CHANGING MAT
Anytime you change baby's nappy, a changing mat will be your new bestie. Try to find one that is a nice soft material, and that can easily go through the washer multiple times without tearing apart, because believe me when I say poop explosions are a real daily thing. - BURP CLOTHS
Life with a newborn involves a lot of feeding, pooping and little throw-ups. Burp cloths are so handy to sling over your shoulder while you're burping bub to make sure your clothes don't get too much baby vomit on them. - BIBS
Carrying on from the burp cloths, bibs are actually just as important for when you're feeding bub.. breast or formula, there will be leakage either way! We went through sooo many bibs because they just got wrecked by the end of each week, since with a newborn, round the clock feeding is practically your new lifestyle. - TOWELS
This was something I didn't think was too important, but my golly, it actually really really is- especially finding a really beautiful, soft one for your baby. It made bath time that much more of a good time for both me and bub because I knew she was staying warm and drying in the most luxe material. - FACE WASHERS/TOWELETTES
As my daughter was born in the middle of Winter, bath time was a struggle because I never wanted her to get too cold. My mum taught me a trick to put a warm towelette over her body as she's in the bath to keep her warm. Oh, it worked like a charm, alright! You can also use them to wipe down bub in the bath instead of constantly splashing water on them.
And last but not least, I know I wasn't planning on mentioning clothing items, but I thought I'd just insert a few things I found helpful that you may be on the fence about.
- BEANIES/BONNETS
Depending on which season your baby is born, a beanie/bonnet is a safe way to keep their little heads nice and warm. You see, as you were giving birth, your baby's head had to fit through your cervix to make it into the world, and in order for that to happen, in a (totally unusual, and I don't even think I still believe it but oh well) way, their heads had to shape in to a form where it would allow for them to get through. Now with your newborn baby, their brain is still developing. Being fresh out of the womb means their heads are very very very fragile, and more commonly still have soft spots all over (more about that later) so using a beanie/bonnet not only keeps them warm, it keeps their little heads safe for future development. - MITTENS
It doesn't matter what season bub is born, they will always need mittens. Their tiny little hands have fingernails and once out of the womb, surprisingly it grows really fast. But as a new parent, it's pretty scary to cut their fingernails for the first time, and a lot of midwives and nurses suggest to wait a couple of weeks before doing so. This is where the mittens come in being handy and helpful; keeping unwanted scratches from your baby's face. - ZIP-UP OVERALLS
*Don't buy the button-up overalls!!! I repeat, do not buy the button-up overalls!!!* Though so many of them are the cuter ones, it's not practical when changing your newborn. They cry, fuss and fight through it and the buttoning up can take ages. So please take my advice and opt for the zip-up cotton overalls. They're a godsend! - SINGLETS
I don't know if this is just me, but under her overalls, I would always put a singlet on first. She was born in Winter so maybe it was my way of adding another layer to keep her warm, but I also found myself doing it in the Summertime too. Newborns have very thin skin, so with that said, it may feel hot to you, but it could be absolutely freezing to them. Always have some singlets handy for added layers to bub's outfits. You never know when you may need them. - SOCKS
We're not bias; fuzzy or not, socks are always great to have in baby's wardrobe. Sometimes you may be gifted an outfit for them where their feet are exposed. Also, at one point, we forgot Blair's mittens at home but we had a pair of socks in her baby bag, so we ended up using them as mittens to save her face from scratches.
And there you have it. My personal list of Newborn Essentials. If you're expecting, I hope you found that useful. It's always my intention to help as best as I can, and I know loads of pregnant women right now which kind of inspired my idea to write this blog post (although, I'd already thought of it after having my second baby but now seems like the perfect time to help.) I'm hoping you enjoyed this read, and even if you're not expecting, I hope you found it interesting enough to want to come back for more blog posts.
Well with that said, thank you so much for visiting today.
There is soooo much more to come on this blog, and I can't wait for any of it.
Time is simply just flying by.
